We all know that recovery is a huge factor for runners. The quicker you recover, the quicker you can be back out there hitting the pavement at your highest level. I fall in the middle of the recovery spectrum. Some days my legs feel like cement blocks after a long run and sometimes I feel as light as a feather. But it all comes down to recovery. We also know that when we get injuries the doctor recommends R.I.C.E. - Rest, ICE, Compression, Elevation. But can we really use elevation to recover from running? Of course we can!
Katherine over at the Lounge Doctor sent us over a Leg Rest to test out. The first thing she asked me was how tall I was. They have different sizes for different sized people, so she sent us a medium for people 5'5" - 5'10". I'm 5'9" and it fit perfect. She sent us the inflatable leg rest which can be used for travel. The inflatable version is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic with a suede finish. There is a hand pump which is also available to purchase to make inflation quick and easy. But if you're cheap, you can inflate it by mouth the old fashion way. This leg rest is perfect to bring with you if you are traveling for a race. Is there a better way to relax in your hotel room with your legs elevated the night before your big race? I think not!
*SIDE NOTE - If you have cats, do not leave the inflatable leg rest out. The cats will use it as a scratch pad and puncture your leg rest. My recommendation would be to purchase a memory foam one for the house and the inflatable for travel.
So if you're serious about your running and your recovery, this item is a must! It took us all a while to jump on the idea of compression, but elevation has been around forever. The people over at the Lounge Doctor can help you become a better runner, just by putting your feet up and relaxing. How awesome is that?
Check out www.loungedoctor.com for more information. The even have an online classroom to educate you on the benefits of elevation.
Thank you to Katherine over at the Lounge Doctor for the inflatable Leg Rest!

Ok, this product review is for the dudes. If you're a gal and want to know the next gift for the runner guy in your life, keep reading!
You're probably saying, "They make underwear for runners"? Of course they do! Sure, why not?
If you're like me guys, you probably like a little support when you run. I've used the old school cotton underwear under my running shorts, but they don't allow my boys to breathe like they need to. The "built-in" netting that comes with most running shorts just weren't made for me either, so I just cut them out. Now I've found a way to get the best of both worlds; support and comfort while running!
Julia over at Mack Weldon sent me over a plethora of underwear for me to test. There were many styles that showed up; Boxer Briefs, Trunks and Briefs. All are made of 47% Lang Staple Cotton / 47.5 Modal / 5% Lycra, so these aren't your dad's old underwear! They also come in a variety of colors, you know, to match your running outfit!
- Boxer Briefs - First up were these bad boys. Since this is the style I use in my everyday life, I gave these a try. They are a little longer than the Trunks and Briefs, so I used them with my longer running shorts so they wouldn't hang out. I really enjoyed the support and noticed that I didn't get the Schweddy Balls that I would normally get while running in underwear. They are very thin fabric, so they didn't feel heavy at all!
- Trunks - On my next run, I tried out the Trunk style. I was able to use my go-to marathon running shorts since they were shorter than the Boxer Briefs. These things rocked! Again, same support and comfort as the previous Boxer Briefs, with a little less fabric. I actually have found that these fit great under my tighter denim jeans. Win/Win in my book!
- Briefs - Ok, this pair brought me back to my youth when I put these on. I use to sport the tighty whiteys as a kid, so I was giggling the whole time before I pulled them up. I tried them out on one of my longer runs and I wasn't disappointed at all. The feeling of having support but nothing to hold me back was amazing. I kept thinking I was superman running down the halls of my childhood home with these on, it was great. I highly recommend the Briefs for longer runs.
They even have a nice "Starter Kit" that you can purchase that includes an undershirt and your choice of underwear style. Give them a test drive!
Thank you to Julia at Mack Weldon! (Oh yea, she's a marathon runner too)

Sundog Eyewear has always been known in the golf industry for having quality sunglasses on the course. Past sponsored players like Hunter Mahan helped put Sundog on the map. But did you know they make some of the best sunglasses out there for us runners? They sure do, and they sponsor Ultra Marathon Champion, Ellie Greenwood. Yea, she's a stud.
Gary over at Sundog sent us a set of the Mach Mela-Lens®. My first thoughts were the attention to detail with the case, very classy. Any pair of shades that you purchase with a solid case let's you know the company is serious about their sunglasses. Then I asked myself, what the heck is a "Mela-Lens®"? A quick jump on the Sundog website educated me on this:
"Melanin is nature’s primary pigment for photo-protection from sunlight damage. Produced by our bodies and deposited in our skin and eyes, melanin acts as a natural defense against the negative impact of sunlight, particularly dangerous blue light. Most sunglasses will effectively protect you from Ultraviolet A and B light, but higher energy visible light, specifically Blue light has been overlooked by the sunglass industry and is as damaging - both to the skin and to the eyes. Numerous studies have shown that dangerous Blue light exposure is also a key factor contributing to AMD or Age Related Macular Degeneration. Melanin is the natural filter to protect humans from sunlight damage."
Basically, Mela-Lens® represents“The Advantage” of superior light filtration. Now I get it!
I'm one of the lucky people that can fit in most style of sunglasses and so when I put these on my noggin, they fit perfect. I noticed how light they were on my face but the true test would come on my first run. We all know that the last thing we need is a pair of sunglasses that bounce around during a run, total dealbreaker! The Mach Mela Lens® performed very nice; no bounce and no weird pressure points anywhere. The nosepiece is adjustable so I fit it for my small nose and it worked like a charm. The lens was nice and clear and didn't give me that fish-bowl effect you get with lesser quality shades. Bottom line, I didn't even notice these were on my face once I started to run and that's the way it should be. Plus, they look rad! If you have a smaller face or a larger one, I think these would work well. I have a larger head and I had no problems with the fit or the look.
If you're in the market for a new set of running sunglasses, head over to Sundog.com and check out their full line of running sunglasses. Thanks to Gary over at Sundog for the full hook up!

I have been a distance runner for years. My biggest pet-peeve has always been when a shoe lace comes untied...usually just as I have found my stride. Recently, I got into triathlons and learned that as a multi-sport athlete, there are certain time-saving and energy-saving tricks that athletes use (and share with each other). One of those tricks is using "speed" laces. I was recently introduced to "Lock Laces" and I have to say they are amazing. They are quick and easy to put into your shoes and you are able to adjust the tightness or looseness as needed. Putting your running shoes on, whether after a bike ride or just heading out for a run, is quick and easy. Simply slide your foot into your shoe, squeeze the lock to adjust the tightness, and head out on your run! No more untied shoes, either!
Although I live in the desert, knowing the Lock Laces are water-resistant is a nice benefit. And because they are reusable, I don't have to buy a new set of Lock Laces when it is time to buy a new pair of running shoes, but I probably will!
I would highly recommend this product to all of my running and triathlon friends. Every athlete should own these!!
twentysixtwo tester and forum member,

After training with the ON CloudSurfer (which I was amazed on how soft the feel was) for a while, I pulled the ON CloudRacer shoes out of the box to use during my longer runs. Again, I was impressed with the packaging. Nice black box, extra laces, and an "Owner Card" so you can join the other runners and talk about these shoes in the cloud! The color combination was very nice with all grey upper with orange highlights and sole. They just look fast!
The first difference I noticed between the CloudSurfer and CloudRacer was how much lighter the CloudRacer was. It's obvious that the CloudSurfer was meant for training, but could be easily used for long runs as well,(I was just blessed to have both to use at my discretion). The CloudRacer has noticeably smaller shock absorbers compared to the CloudSurfer; this definatley helped lighten the shoe up even more. The upper part of the shoe also had a much more lighter material intergrated into the shoe with an increased difference in airflow.
Once again I noticed the little "bump" on the insole, but that quickly went away once I was running in them. The one thing I noticed while using both ON shoes was how my legs had less fatigue after my runs. I didn't do anything different with my training, so I have to attribute this to the lighter, softer shoe compared to the ASICS I've been running with in the past. The feel of this shoes was just as inpressive as the CloudSurfer. It was light and soft, even with the smaller CloudTec shock absorbers....did I say light?
My race day finally came and I was ready to run the VA Beach Rock n Roll Half Marathon. And I mean I was ready! I had a really good confidence with these shoes knowing that I could possibly run my PR. Going into any kind of event you want to know that your equipment is 100% ready to go. That's how I felt with these shoes. Well, we woke up Sunday morning to find tempreatures at 75 degrees and almost 100% humidity; not good for going for a PR. I missed my goal by 3 minutes but I NEVER had any feet problems or pains. A true first for me!
After spending over a month in my CloudSurfer and CloudRacer ON Shoes I'd have to say that I am very impressed with the overall comfort and performance of each shoe. They performed just as promised and gave me a confident feeling duing my runs and half marathon. Let's just say that I won't be running in another shoe for along time..... If you're looking for something new and light, head on over to ON Shoes. Give you legs a break from the norm. http://www.on-running.com/
I've been an ASICS lifer during my running career. Every now and then I'll try another shoe just to test the waters and see what's out there, but I always find myself going back to the ol faithful, ASICS. I have a failry neutral gait, so I can pick and choose from the line. I had tried the lighter ASICS shoes in the past, but the soles felt very "hard" to me. So when Doug Trotman from the ON Shoes PR dynamo contacted me to do a product review, I was stoked. I had heard of On Running Shoes and seen them on the feet of the occasional runner at an event, but I never had a chance to see them up close. And I heard they were very LIGHT!
I did some reasearch about the company and found out that ON Running is a newer company based in Zurich, Switzerland. Their slogan is "runnning - reinvented". Not a bad idea. The shoes were designed by a Swiss engineer who was tired of injuries to his knees over many years of running. I can relate to that for sure!
This wasn't any normal product review as Doug sent over 2 sets of ON's finest shoes - the CloudSurfer and the CloudRacer. He wanted a comparison of the two and I was happy to give it a try. I was just getting ready to start my training for the Virginia Beach Rock n Roll Half Marathon, so this was a perfect opportunity for me to try out my new wheels.
The first shoe I tried out was the CloudSurfer. Right out of the box I noticed how light the shoe was. The all black with lime green highlights was a different look for me, but it grew on me for sure. It also came with an extra set of black laces, incase the lime greens ones are a bit much for you. My first run I noticed a little raised bump on the insole, right in the middle of the front ball of my foot. Not something that worried me as I knew I would get used to it really quick. Sure enough, after a few runs I couldn't tell the little support bump was there. The soles of the shoe offer a unique "CloudTec Element", which are basically 3D cushions or shock absorbers. These cushions allow the absorbsion of verticle and horizontal impacts, giving a nice soft feel. They compress and then allow for a nice push off. I'll take all the help I can get and this is a cool feature. I would say that this sole acts as small springs with really noticing a bounce, if that makes sense? This is something I've never seen in a running shoe or even experienced before. All I can say is WOW.
The upper part of the ON CloudSurfer was a pretty basic design with lightweight, breathable material. Nothing flashy at all compared to the soles of the shoes. The toe box was just right for me; not too narrow and not too wide.
I used the CloudSurfer as part of my main training during the week as I noticed the cushion elements were larger than the CloudRacer. I was falling in love with these shoes and could only wonder what is in store of me with the ON CloudRacer. As for the CloudRacer, you'll have to keep reading my other review for spec on these bad boys!
It seems everyone has an energy gel out now and I've tried just about all of them on the market. For me it all comes down the the flavor and the results. I mean, you can have a party in your mouth when you're running, but if the product doesn't give you the nutritional boost that you need, then why eat it?
You know when the people over at ClifBar create a gel for endurance athletes, it's going to not only taste good, but give you the energy you'll need to get you through your workout. When Lauren Kanouse over at Clifbar sent us a care package full of their assortment of gels, we knew we were in for a treat! I tend to use gels only during my longer runs, so it took a while until I could dig into the box to sample. Here's what we had a chance to sample:
Clif Shot Energy Gel:
Vanilla - Taste like the frosting on a cake....unreal!
Chocolate - if you like chocolate...this is your gel
Citrus - a nice break from the bland citrus from other companies
Mocha - I'm a coffee lover so.....mmmm mmmm
Razz Strawberry - This one didn't have caffeine, but still tasty
Clif Shot Turbo Gel:
Chocolate Cherry - too strong for me
Double Expresso - this is for all you that like the straight jet fuel
When it comes down to it, Clif Shot provides the widest variety for your palate. You're bound to find one you like and with the caffeine kick, you'll be finishing you're run with a boost of energy. Thanks to Lauren at Clif Bar for the samples and fueling us during our marathon training!

I have been product testing LEG LUBE® for the past few months and guess what...I have sworn off shaving cream FOREVER! This stuff is amazing! When shaving, a small drop of this performance shave gel covers a large area. Add a little water just before you shave and the results are fabulous.
